You've been working hard at developing a healthy lifestyle for sometime now and have been successful in keeping that weight off. Congratulations, you have done an amazing job in what can be difficult times for doing so! It takes a concerted effort on our part to eat healthy and getting up and being active. However, I bet there is one aspect you didn't think of with your adventure of keeping up this healthy routine. Want to know what it is? Well, I'm going to tell you, that is gratitude. Yes, you heard me correct, gratitude. It has taken effort to get where you are at, and perhaps you are wanting to go a little further, but looking back from where you began and where you are at now and being grateful is important.
Think about the difficulties you had moving around before you began your healthy journey, think about how you felt mentally about yourself, even think about all of the health risks you were facing then compared to now. I can assure you things have improved leaps and bounds and that is fantastic! It is easy for us to become caught up with the current hassles and or imperfections about ourselves. This is why it is important for us to not forget where it was we began from not so long ago and to ultimately be your own cheerleader. However, when things are feeling down and not going quite right, here are some techniques that can assist in lifting those spirits.
Writing it down:
Perhaps you are already keeping a journal of what you are consuming and exercising throughout the day. Why not go a little further and write down each day something that makes you happy. It doesn't have to extensive, but it is a great lift me up when things don't seem to be going your way. Some examples are: Walked, ran, biked a certain distance, spoke with a good friend, you received a hug that day, someone said thank you, etc. When feeling down look back on these simple yet beneficial aspects and remember things most likely are not that bad.
Searching out the good:
It's easy for us to dwell on the negative and not the positive. So, when you are having a difficult moment, make a concerted effort to seek out the positive of the issue. Seeking out the positive is a beneficial way of not only assisting in reducing stress but also helping in productively problem solving through the situation.
You are not alone:
Remember you are not alone so don't try to act as if you are so. Lean on loved ones or friends when feeling down. They are a great support system when feeling down. Just expressing to someone how you are feeling is a great way to unload any stress and perhaps will even enable you to recognize the issue perhaps is not as bad as originally thought. Just remember it is important to support yourself with success. The saying misery loves company, well reverse that and tell yourself success loves company. So make sure those friends and family members that you lean are or supportive ones who whole heatedly care about you achieving your fullest potential.
Give a pat on the back:
All of the above suggestions are useful but one you should never do is forget to give yourself a big old pat on your back for yourself and your accomplishments. Even if others are recognizing your accomplishments, it is important for you yourself to recognize your own accomplishments. You are ultimately your best companion and support, so go ahead give yourself that pat.
Sure, perhaps you are wanting to go further in your healthy journey and by all means don't hold yourself back. Just remember where you started from and recognize the accomplishments achieved thus far. By recognizing these aspects of gratitude you are helping in reducing stress which can be one of the bigger stumbling blocks for anyone to veer away from his or her healthy focus and cause even more damage in the long run. Life is always throwing us curve balls, but being on our top guard and recognizing things are perhaps not as bad as it may seem at first will help us overcome and ultimately protect our healthy selves. Excess stress is the hidden side to the downfall to any weight management that many of us don't associate as being so. The above suggestions are small but important tools for helping fight off the accumulation of such unnecessary stresses in life. Again congratulations on your achievements thus far with your healthy behaviors and keep on moving forward, the rewards are well worth it!
