Life is busy for many of us between demanding work schedules and family obligations. Because of this constant juggling act, the one thing that often is thrown aside is creating time for exercise. Sure, we have heard the discussions of how exercise assists in weight loss and weight management, but it also is a great method for helping boost moral. Still, with all the research and press discussing these attributes we still find ourselves finding excuses why we can't seem to find the time.
Here are some solutions though that can be a good stepping stone for turning that lack of time to exercise to having time to exercise.
Excel in multitasking:
Between the long commute to and from work, endless meetings and family life I'm sure you are already a proficient multitasker. However, here is a way to take it a step further. How far is your commute to work? Instead of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, how about riding a bike to work. Many places today have facilities to clean up and change outfits once at work. Even using the bike to do errands is a great way to multitask. Not only are you still fulfilling your obligations, you are outdoors getting fresh air and ultimately experiencing the benefits of moving and being fit.
Instead of having a meeting in a typical conference room, perhaps take the clients out on walks. This is a great way to remove one's self from the dismal setting and stimulate the creative juices while being active.
Shift exercise into the current schedule of events:
Free time for many is unheard of, but being fit does not have to be an individual activity. Get the family involved. How do you and the rest of the family members spend time together? Make that family time an active time. One suggestion is to get outdoors and go for a walk or hike as a group. Perhaps your kid(s) are on a sports team. Get out with them when they are practicing at home and participate. That is a great bonding time, and showing your child you are taking interest in what he or she is doing. Ultimately use that time together as a valued time for staying active and having fun as a team!
Be conscious of how you feel after you exercise:
After exercising, do you posses that sense of accomplishment? Do your spirits seem to be higher, or are you filled with more energy? Being mindful of how you feel after exercising is a great way to build that necessary momentum for returning for more.
Listen:
Every day presents new challenges and feelings. Some days may be aggravating or stressful requiring you to release a great deal of built frustration. While some days may require a more subdue method for escaping the turmoils of life. Having a variety of methods for exercising and listing to your body and mind in what they need is important. Trying to participate in a high intense routine such as a spin class when your body is mentally spent may not be a beneficial combination, but perhaps that walk in the park or yoga class is exactly what you need to re-collect to yourself. Be aware of what your body says to you, it will not only make for a more pleasurable and efficient experience but also provide you with what you need for moving forward.
Change your perspective toward exercising:
Many of us consider exercising a chore or just merely chose not to do it. But think of it as a gift that we often take for granted. There are many individuals who would love to take a walk through the park but are not physically or mentally able to. Be appreciative of your body's capabilities and the ability to be creative in integrating that exercise activity into your schedule, when there are many who are truly not able to. Sure there are days we may be busier than others or just don't feel like doing anything, but look as exercise as a gift in your life and utilize it to its fullest! Trust me, it takes being active to a whole new level of appreciation.
The examples given are just some suggestions on how one can fit some exercise into his or her busy schedule and that it isn't impossible to do. It takes a little bit of creative effort on one's part to make this happen, but believe me when I say, it is well worth it in the end! Not only from feeling accomplished for doing it, but from a health management perspective as well. Now I challenge you to start planning and be active!
